Plexus Worldwide University Partnership

Plexus Worldwide Deepens Science Push with University of Illinois Partnership on Personalized Nutrition

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Plexus Worldwide has joined the external partners program of the Personalized Nutrition Initiative at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications. The move places the Scottsdale-based gut-health company alongside researchers and industry players focused on turning personalized nutrition from lab science into everyday practice.

Dr. Ren-Hau Lai, PhD, Plexus Vice President of Product Innovation and a University of Illinois alum, has also been named to the Initiative’s external advisory committee. The campus-wide effort brings together roughly 75 faculty across 24 departments spanning nutrition, food science, medicine, data science, and AI.

“Personalized nutrition is moving quickly from research into everyday practice, and the science is still being written,” Lai said. “Being part of the Personalized Nutrition Initiative puts Plexus alongside the researchers doing that work and alongside other organizations across the food, nutrition, and health sectors who share the same commitment to evidence

That commitment to scientific rigor helps ensure that what we develop is not only innovative, but also meaningful and trustworthy for our community.”

Dr. Sharon Donovan, PhD, RD, DFASN, Director of the Personalized Nutrition Initiative, welcomed the addition, noting that the program connects leaders from food, agriculture, health, and technology to solve shared challenges in a partner-driven setting.

Stuart MacMillan, Plexus Chief Executive and Growth Officer, framed the partnership around the company’s core ambition: “Gut health is personal. We are aiming to become the number one gut health company in the world by personalizing the journey for each Brand Ambassador and customer, one microbiome at a time. Joining the Personalized Nutrition Initiative at U of I connects our work to world-class science and helps us make nutrition genuinely personal for the people we serve. This is a true partnership where each strengthens the other.”

The People Behind Plexus: From Family Roots in Direct Selling to a Gut-Health Focus

Plexus traces its modern form to 2008, when Tarl Robinson and partners acquired and repositioned a small Scottsdale company that had been selling a single non-consumable product the Breast Chek Kit for at-home breast self-exams. Robinson, whose parents both earned full-time incomes as network marketing distributors, had built his own distributor business in college selling nutritional and weight-loss products. After relocating to Arizona in 2002, he ran an estate-management firm handling multi-million-dollar clients and trusts before seeing an opportunity in the struggling Plexus entity.

Alec Clark joined in 2011 as Chief Marketing Officer, became a co-owner in 2012, and helped lead the 2013 restructuring into Plexus Worldwide LLC. He was named President in 2016 and, with Robinson, formally received the Founder title in 2018. Clark brought more than 25 years of network-marketing leadership experience from companies including MonaVie, Drive Global Marketing, and Enrich/Unicity. He attended the University of Utah and has been active in establishing Plexus Charities, the company’s 501(c)(3) arm.

The early pivot proved decisive. In 2009 the company introduced Plexus Slim (the well-known “Pink Drink”), a prebiotic-focused weight-management beverage. Positive customer feedback and rapid word-of-mouth shifted the entire focus toward gut health and the microbiome. What began as a one-product operation evolved into a portfolio of more than 20–30 wellness products emphasizing prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, and gut-barrier support.

Robinson has served as Founder and Chairman (and previously CEO); Clark as Founder and President/Vice Chairman. In recent leadership transitions, the founders have moved into more strategic board-level roles while professional executives handle day-to-day operations. Stuart MacMillan, who previously served as Chief Global Development Officer, was promoted in 2026 to Chief Executive & Growth Officer. MacMillan brings more than 35 years of executive experience, including 25 years in direct selling, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Business Awards in 2022.

Dr. Ren-Hau Lai joined as Vice President of Product Innovation after more than 15 years developing functional foods, nutraceuticals, and dietary supplements at companies including AG1, Supergut, RYZE, General Mills, and Mead Johnson Nutrition. He holds a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois and has been named as an inventor on GLP-1 prebiotic formulation patents. His appointment and the U of I partnership signal a continued emphasis on scientific grounding.

Plexus remains privately held. Exact ownership percentages are not publicly detailed beyond the founders’ controlling influence and the involvement of key executives. The company operates primarily through independent Brand Ambassadors in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, with a relatively lean corporate staff supporting a large field organization.

Products and Real-World Feedback

Plexus positions itself as a pioneer in gut health, with flagship offerings centered on microbiome activation. Key products include:

  • Plexus Slim Microbiome Activating (the Pink Drink) – a patented prebiotic formula claimed to support beneficial microbes (including increases in Akkermansia, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium in company-cited studies), healthy glucose metabolism, and weight management.

  • ProBio 5  a multi-strain probiotic blend aimed at balancing intestinal yeast and supporting digestion.

  • Bio Cleanse a magnesium- and bioflavonoid-based formula intended to support the body’s natural cleansing processes.

  • Newer entries such as Plexus Armor, focused on gut-barrier integrity with ingredients like A2 colostrum, L-glutamine, prebiotic fiber, and a postbiotic.

  • Additional lines covering hunger control, vital biome precision probiotics, and broader wellness.

Company materials highlight the use of advanced models such as SHIME (a computer-controlled gastrointestinal simulator) and third-party testing. Products carry standard disclaimers that they are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.

User experiences are mixed but often passionate. Many Brand Ambassadors and customers report improved digestion, reduced bloating, better regularity, weight-management support, clearer skin, and higher energy especially when using the core gut-health system consistently. Some individuals with long-standing digestive challenges describe meaningful symptom relief. Independent reviews and ratings platforms show average scores in the mid-3-to-4-star range, with praise for product quality and criticism centered on price, taste preferences, and the network-marketing compensation structure. Skeptics note that many ingredients are available more affordably elsewhere and that strong clinical evidence for specific high-level claims remains limited outside company-sponsored or in-vitro work. As with most MLMs, income results vary widely; average earnings disclosures typically show modest supplemental income for the majority of Ambassadors.

Looking Ahead

The University of Illinois partnership arrives as Plexus pursues “Vision 30” its long-term goal of becoming the leading authority in gut health by its 30th year. Recent recognition includes placement among Arizona’s Most Admired Companies, Blue Zones Project Approved Worksite designation for its Scottsdale headquarters, and consistent ranking among the larger privately held companies in Arizona. Philanthropy remains visible through the Nourish One initiative, which has contributed tens of millions of meals in partnership with organizations such as Feeding America.
