The 3rd Language: A Legislative Shift to Safeguard Network

The 3rd Language: Securing the Future of Network Marketing

By Ryan D. Chamberlin, Florida House Representative & 30-Year Direct Sales Veteran .The 3rd Language.

If you’ve been part of the network marketing industry for decades, it’s because you saw a powerful vision—and you never let it go. That vision, however, has become increasingly blurred by recent trends and industry shifts. Some have even wondered if our profession can survive the disruption.

It can—and it will.

But to ensure its future, the direct selling industry must now embrace what I call The 3rd Language.

Understanding The 3rd Language

For years, our industry has relied on two foundational languages to build, sustain, and grow successful direct sales organizations

Field Language

This is the voice of team builders—leadership, recognition, and the community created through authentic relationships. Field Language speaks to the soul of network marketing, driven by those who’ve built large teams and earned respect through consistency and trust.

Corporate Language

This is the language of operations, ownership, and vision. While some corporate teams speak Field Language, many do not. Likewise, many field leaders struggle to understand the decisions behind corporate strategy.

For companies to truly thrive, there must be a balance between Field and Corporate Language.

The Emerging Language: Legislative Language

Now, a third and essential language is emerging—The 3rd Language: the language of legislation.

This isn’t just a buzzword. It’s a necessity.

As a member of the Florida House of Representatives and a 30-year veteran in both field and corporate leadership, I now hold a unique role: helping translate the needs of our industry into laws that protect and elevate direct sales across the country.

Why Legislative Language Matters Now

In 2025, I introduced HB249, one of the first bills in Florida aimed at protecting the direct sales profession. This was done in collaboration with leaders from ANMP and DSA.

The truth is, most lawmakers don’t understand our industry. That’s dangerous. It leaves us vulnerable to misinformation and misrepresentation, which can lead to legislation that harms the very foundation of network marketing.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

What Companies Can Do: Speak The 3rd Language

If you’re a direct sales company or field leader, you can start speaking The 3rd Language by:

  • Building relationships with your local and state representatives

  • Educating lawmakers about the importance of independent entrepreneurship

  • Supporting bills that protect the freedoms of direct sellers

  • Becoming an active voice when legislation is being considered

The only way to secure our future is to be part of the legislative conversation—before decisions are made without us.

Honored to Serve and Lead

With my unique experience in both network marketing and government, I’m committed to being a bridge between the two worlds. And I invite every leader, every company, and every marketer to join me.

Let’s speak The 3rd Language—together.

If you have ideas, issues, or want to be part of this movement, reach out. Our collective voice is powerful. And our industry’s best days are ahead.
